Transferring your domain

When you sign up with Design-a-Might you have the Nominet domain database changed to point to the name servers listed below, which are set-up to give the specific address of your website.

Why do I have to transfer my domain?

Firstly, a basic explanation of the domain name system (this isn't entirely accurate but for all intents and purposes it will help you're understanding of what is happening).

Each country has its own central registry where all the domain names for that country are listed. In the UK this central registry is called Nominet. When you type a UK address into your browser the Nominet list is checked to find the name servers for that domain.

Once your browser knows the name servers, it contacts them and wants to know the specific address of the computer that your website is located on. Once it has that, it then goes to that computer and retrieves your site.

Our name servers are listed above, so all that is needed to get your domain visible on the web is to have these entered in the central registry for your domain. This task is undertaken by Domain Registrars, who act on your behalf to update the central registry.

There are a lot of domain registrars, however Design-a-Might recommends Just-the-name. Under £10 for 2 years on UK domains is hard to beat on price and we know from experience the quality of service is excellent. However the choice of Domain Registrar is up to you. As long as you get them to update the Nominet details for your domain to the name servers above, your site will be fully functional.

The job of transferring your domain is essentially up to you, as we don't actually have any power to transfer the domain, for authorisation reasons only the owner and certain contacts can change details, however, we are willing to give you help when you have specific questions.

Please also remember that after you've changed it, it can take up to 2-3 days to propagate throughout the world, meaning, the change may not be visible for up to 2 days (it could be longer if you are behind a firewall or proxy).
